Shut the f**k up!!
Posted on October 27th, 2006 No commentsIf you haven’t heard about Barbra Streisand’s explosion yet, you’ve been living under a rock. Well somebody thought it would be a great idea to make it into a dance mix. It’s brilliant.
Go to the site of the creator to hear the mix. It should play automatically once the site loads, so be careful if you’re at work.

Stuffed?
Posted on October 24th, 2006 No comments Like to dine out? Of course you do. That’s one of the reasons you live in New York City. Be forewarned, though. McDonald’s isn’t the only “restaurant” guilty of supersizing. Americans want more on their plate, and chefs everywhere are happy to accommodate.
According to the article, “A typical restaurant meal has at least 60% more calories than the average meal made at home.” Furthermore, “portions served at restaurants have steadily increased since the 1970s in tandem with the rise in obesity rates.”
Be conscious of this next time you’re eating out. Forget what your mother told you. You don’t have to (and probably shouldn’t) clean your plate.

I’m too sexy
Posted on October 14th, 2006 No commentsI worked out at the Boston Sports Club in Allston this afternoon. On the way to the locker room, I saw this poster on the wall:

It’s a poster for a group exercise sample class, but wait a minute, who’s that sexy beast in the upper right corner? Yes, that’s me. It’s from a shoot taken about five years ago.My modeling career would make Janice Dickinson proud:
1) One shot of me was on a bike, taking a spinning class. My foot, from the ankle down, made it onto a poster.
2) Another shot of me was holding a boxing bag while a boxing instructor pounded the crap out of it. That one made it into the back of one of those pamphlets at the gym.
3) The above shot actually made it onto a poster at 44th & 5th a couple of years ago. There was a huge shot of a beautiful model-type person working out, and then there was a small inset at the bottom right corner with me on the step, as if to say “Look, average people like you can do step too!”

Is New York going too far?
Posted on October 5th, 2006 No comments When the smoking ban went into effect, no one was happier than me. However, I’m not sure how I feel about the proposal to do the same for artificial trans fats.
It’s a good rule of thumb to avoid food that contains any kind of oil that is “partially hydrogenated.” This is a relatively easy task to accomplish at home, but when eating in many of the thousands of New York restaurants, it becomes difficult to control. Should the health department subject restaurant to fines if they use this artery-clogging fat in their foods?
I can see why the mere mention of such a policy is being met with hostility. The smoking ban wasn’t so much about the health of the smoker. It was about the health of the second-hand smoker. A smoker has the right to make the choice (albeit a stupid one) to damage his/her own health. He/she does not, however, have the right to damage the health of others. Since there’s no such thing as second-hand fat, the argument supporting the trans fat ban is a little bit weaker. The guy sitting next to me shoving a doughnut in his mouth isn’t going to make my arteries clog, so why should I bother him?
On the other hand, if such a ban would save lives in the end (like the seat-belt law), it can be argued that it’s a good thing, especially since there are alternatives to these bad fats that are healthier and taste almost the same.
