Spin Rage
Posted on August 27th, 2007 No comments I’ve taught on the Upper East Side. I’ve taught for Equinox. The fact that this happened at an Upper East Side Equinox therefore doesn’t surprise me in the least. (Thanks, Dave, for the link.)

Overweight? Blame others.
Posted on August 25th, 2007 No comments The recipe for staying fit is pretty simple. Eat healthy and exercise. For some, it’s easier than it is for others.
It seems that there are more and more reasons why some people are supposedly doomed to remain overweight despite efforts to improve their health. Among the possible excuses that can be invoked are glands, genetics, happy events, unhappy events, stress, influences from friends, and childhood eating habits. Want another excuse? It’s been recently found that even a virus that can contribute to obesity.
Check out the article “Why Fatties Say Everyone’s to Blame but Themselves.” The title is a bit cruel, the message is a good one: Despite the numerous excuses that exist, in the end most overweight people are simply not eating well and getting enough exercise.

Some fitness myths
Posted on August 19th, 2007 No comments When I stumbled on this list fitness myths, I figured it was like most of the others — pretty much debunking what we all knew to be wrong in the first place. This one, however, is better than most and is worth a closer look. Among the busted myths are the following:
3) Aerobic activity in the morning will boost your metabolism throughout the day. This is indeed true, but the boost is only by a very small amount. (I’m guilty of believing this one.)
7) You don’t necessarily have to sweat to get an effective workout.
You don’t necessarily have to be in pain in order to have an unsafe workout. -
Only a boob would believe this….

Introducing the F-cup Cookie! Scarf down one of these and guess where the fat goes. Here’s a hint: it’s not your ass.

Can you catch obesity?
Posted on August 6th, 2007 No comments When the weight problem in the United States is referred to as an epidemic, it isn’t meant to imply that obesity is contagious. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine, however, reports that it is indeed possible to “catch” obesity from others. In particular, if someone’s close friend becomes obese, there’s a 171% chance that he/she will become obese as well.
Surprisingly, siblings and spouses were found to have much less of an influence on each other.
Before you dump your chubby best bud, keep in mind that you can have a positive influence on others: weight loss was also found to be contagious. (Let’s face it — there’s no way in hell they’re going to let YOU get all the attention.)
