If you see it, you’ll eat it.
Posted on September 29th, 2007 No comments Contrary to popular belief, what makes us overeat isn’t how good the food is or how hungry we are. At least that’s the claim that Cornell’s Dr. Brian Wansink makes based on his research. He places the blame instead on how visible and convenient the food is.
A jar of candy sitting on your desk is going to tempt you over and over again. You may resist the first several times, but eventually you’ll give in. Move the bowl further than arm’s-reach away and bingo, your munching frequency goes down.
Wansink calls this temptation to eat without thinking “Mindless Eating” and he’s even written a book about it with that very title.
How can we avoid falling prey to this weight-gaining behavior? Keep serving bowls off the dinner table and don’t snack directly from the bag. In other words, make it more difficult to mindlessly keep shoving food in your mouth.

This is your brain… on step
Posted on September 22nd, 2007 No comments Most of us exercise to look good. Some of us even exercise to strengthen our hearts. How many of us, however, exercise to improve our brains?
Believe it or not, growing evidence suggests that exercise helps regenerate fresh neurons, making the brain stronger and faster. (In other words, your group fitness instructor isn’t as dumb as he/she seems.)
Furthermore, it’s looking like exercise is more than just a mood-booster. It may actually be a treatment for depression that is as effective as medication.
Remember all of this next time you’re feeling unmotivated to go to the gym. See you in class, Einstein.

Lunk alarm
Posted on September 8th, 2007 No commentsIf there’s one thing I hate, it’s meatheads in the free-weight area who grunt and throw their weights. Unfortunately there’s no way to tell these guys to cut the crap without threatening their masculinity.
Well a gym out in Hampton Bays seems to have found the answer. I was delighted to find this sign hanging up on the wall, complete with a functioning siren.

I asked the girl behind the desk if they ever turn the siren on, and she said that occasionally they do. She even turned it on for me. My dream is to have one of these things in every gym in the city. Some day….
